Ben Stewart

Ben Stewart has 25 years of military experience as a Commander in the U. S. Coast Guard and retired in 2003. He now holds the position of Senior Vice President, Facility Engineering for Terremark, a Verizon Company and leads a team of professionals who design and build energy efficient mission critical facilities around the world. He is also the company’s Facility Security Officer ensuring all government national security requirements are satisfied. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School and holds a Masters in Business Administration from Monmouth University. He is currently pursuing his PhD, is a Professional Engineer and the Area Chair for the University of Phoenix/South Florida Campus College of Information Systems and Technology. His is also the founder and President of the Miami Chapter of AFCOM; a professional organization that fosters the education and advancement of professionals in the field of data center design and management.

Vali Sorell

Syska Hennessy
Vali Sorell has more than 25 years of experience as an HVAC design engineer, with almost half of those years involved in the design and commissioning of HVAC systems for critical facilities. Within Syska Hennessy’s Critical Facilities Group, Vali is the Chief HVAC Engineer and the lead technical resource for mechanical design. He serves on the Critical Facilities Technical Leadership Committee as well as the Green Data Center Committee. He is responsible for developing the concepts and innovations on a wide range of data center projects within the United States, China, and Middle East. Through the publication of white papers and technical papers in industry journals and transactions, as well as speaking engagements at industry conferences, Vali has been a leader in updating the industry’s current best practices and advancing the principles of sustainable design as they relate to critical facility work.
Vali is a long-time member of ASHRAE TC-9.9 "Mission Critical Facilities, Technology Spaces, & Electronic Equipment", and has served as the TC-9.9 Program Subcommittee Chair. He has a BS in Genetics from McGill University in Montreal, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University in New York. |

David Filas

Dave Filas is a Data Center Engineer with Trinity Health, a healthcare company operating 46 hospitals in nine states. He is responsible for uninterrupted operation of the 20+ data centers coast to coast which support the hospitals, as well as leading design efforts in both new data center construction and renovations. In his aggressive adoption of new technology, he performs most of the research and development into new data center technologies and methods, and frequently tests prototype products. He is also responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive data center monitoring strategy throughout the organization.
Dave received his Bachelor of Science in Information Technologies from Franklin University, a Master of Science in Information Technologies from Capella University, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Construction Management from Eastern Michigan University. He has an Associate Constructor certification from the American Institute of Constructors (AIC) as well as APC’s Data Center University certification. |

Prior to his work at GRC, Mr. Best was a lead engineer at Microstaq, a MEMS start-up, and at Bell Helicopter. Mr. Best holds a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.

He has managed multiple IT businesses during that time, ranging from startup companies to multimillion dollar businesses. Within the last three years, Geoff’s data center expertise has resulted in more than 44,000 MWh worth of energy savings—$3.5 million in cost savings per year for data center customers.

As SVP of data center services at Internap, Mike Higgins leads the product management, business development and data center services design and site selection functions for Internap’s data center services business. He brings to Internap a deep knowledge and 20+ years of extensive financial, product planning and leadership experience in the telecommunications industry.
Mike came to Internap in January 2004 as Internap’s vice president of financial planning and analysis. At Internap, he has also served as a board member for the Company’s joint venture with NTT of Japan. In late 2006, he assumed the responsibility for growing and expanding Internap’s colocation product offering. Prior to Internap, Mike held numerous leadership roles in finance, business operations and business development during an 18-year tenure at MCI. He holds an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Bridgeport and a B.S. in Accounting from Villanova University. |

Previously Kevin served as the network manager for 8 years with illustro Systems International; a mainframe software and servicing company. Before joining illustro, he held the position of Senior Systems Consultant with WT Technologies. He is an avid cyclist, skier and mountain climber.

Mike Bailey leads Ecova’s Engineering Services team which provides engineering and analytical services to Ecova utility and business efficiency and resource management programs. A licensed professional engineer in Oregon and California, Mike has almost 20 years of engineering and project management experience in a wide range of industries, including agriculture, aerospace, oil production and refining, semiconductors, data centers, food service, commercial construction of owner-occupied facilities, and tenant improvement projects of leased spaces. Mike has extensive experience working with facility systems. Mike is Certified Energy Manager (CEM) from the Association of Energy Engineers. Mike brings a strong background in financial analysis and business management to his position at Ecova, with an MBA from Babson College and previous work for Intel as a Finance Manager responsible for over $1 Billion in annual capital purchases. In addition to his activities at Ecova, Mike serves as a voting member of the Northwest Regional Technical Forum (RTF) the technical advisory committee to the Northwest Power Council. Mike also serves on the board of directors of the Oregon Association of Professional Energy Managers (OAPEM), and is an active member of ASHRAE.
